Sabato 9 ottobre dalle ore 8.30 presso la sede di Milano del Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche (Via Corti, 12), si svolgerà il workshop Metrologia Alimentare: approcci e strumenti per misurare la qualità degli alimenti, coordinata da Laura Cavallarin dell’Istituto di scienze delle produzioni alimentari del Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche (Ispa-Cnr) e Andrea Rossi dell’Istituto Nazionale di ricerca metrologica (Inrim-Cnr).

La Metrologia Alimentare è un area di ricerca emergente nei settori scientifici, industriali e sociali, che risponde alle sfide di poter eseguire misure tracciabili al Sistema Internazionale di sostanze, costituenti e contaminanti, presenti negli alimenti. Gli impatti principali delle attività nell’ambito della Metrologia Alimentare sono rappresentati dallo sviluppo di nuove strade della tracciabilità delle misure. Ciò consente sia l’applicazione di metodi veloci di campionamento per processi di screening, sia lo sviluppo di materiali standard di riferimento certificati, i quali permettono di misurare le componenti alimentari, consentendo così di garantire qualità, sicurezza e provenienza degli alimenti.
Scopo dell’evento è presentare le evidenze scientifiche utili ai fini dello sviluppo di misure a supporto della qualità.

@ CNRExpoLab experts will introduce the fields in which #FoodMetrology -based approaches are being implemented into decision and policy making.
Dr. Franz Ulberth, from EU-JRC IRMM, Belgium, the leading EU laboratory working on development, production and distribution of reference materials, and in the development and validation of methods for food and feed analysis, will provide a picture of current and future challenges in food analysis to ensure safe and authentic products on the market.
Dr. Eniko Varga, from EFSA, Italy, the EU authority in charge of providing scientific evidences end expert support on food safety issues to decision and policy makers, will describe how reliable data are strongly needed for risk assessment purposes.
Dr. Isabel Castanheira, Portugal, from the International Measurement Confederation (IMEKO) Committee “Metrology in Food and Nutrition”, will talk about the contribution of IMEKO FOODS to strengthen the link between Metrology and Food Actors.
To draw a more complete picture on the state-of-the-art of #FoodMetrology research, the responsibles of research programs in national research institutions and private companies around Europe have been invited.
Dr. Andrea Rossi and Dr. Luigi Bergamaschi, from INRiM, Italy, will give a detailed picture on the Food Metrology program at the Italian Metrology Institute, providing examples of fingerprinting technologies applied to the analysis in food and raw materials.
Dr. Heidi Goenaga - Infante, from LCG, UK, will report efforts by her international life sciences measurement and testing company in providing reference materials and analytical testing products and services to support food safety.
Dr. Michelangelo Pascale, from ISPA CNR, Italy, will describe how International Proficiency Testing are beingused as a tool to evaluate the state-of-art of mass spectrometry-based methods for multi-mycotoxin measurements, in order to ensure standardization of results.
Dr. Marilena Gili, from IZS, Italy, will provide a picture of how metrological approaches are being implemented in official controls for veterinary drug residues determination in food by Veterinary Medical Research Institutes in Italy.
Dr. Giovanna Zappa, from ENEA, Italy, will give a picture of the Metrological Program for Innovation and Sustainability of the agro-food system in the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development.




Event: Food Metrology: Approaches and Tools for Measuring Food Quality

@CNRExpoLab experts will provide some examples of #FoodMetrology -based approaches to the detection of food contaminants.

Dr. Giuffrida and Dr. Monaci, from CNR ISPA, Italy, will describe MS-based methods as a multi target screening tool for monitoring allergens contamination in food products. Indeed, EU labelling rules establish that consumers must be provided with comprehensive ingredient information to allow them to easily identify ingredients they need to avoid. Allergen detection in contaminated food is mainly based on immunochemistry techniques, although cross-reactivity and/or by possible epitope masking caused by food processing may complicate detection. MS-based methods for high-specificity and high-sensitivity detection of allergens in foods will be presented.

Dr. Lardy-Fontan, from LNE, France, will describe how metrological measurements contribute to the survey of pharmaceutical residues in water for a better protection of consumers. She will describe multiresidues methods and their importance in the detection of emerging substances, high concern substances and incoming regulatory substances. She will also present examples of metrological design of reference methods in the field of water contamination.

Dr. Salafranca, from EINA - UNIZAR, Spain, will address metrological approaches to assess the migration of contaminants from packaging into food. Illustrative examples of the most challenging studies recently carried out by his research group with multilayer materials will be presented: [1] the determination of non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) from polyurethane adhesives, [2] the profile of volatile radiolysis compounds formed as a consequence of gamma-irradiation of multilayers and [3] the contamination due to the transfer of substances from printing inks (set-off) from the outer to the inner layers, intended for direct contact with food.

Dr. Bigini, from Istituto Mario Negri, Italy, will present metrological strategies applied to high throughput screening of toxic effects of Titanium dioxide nano-particles on gastrointestinal tract. In the last years several works have pinpoint the dangerous role of the ingestion TiO2 nano-particles, a common food additive used for whitening foods, but its real impact is still far from being elucidated. Dr. Bigini will report on the generation of an integrated platform to evaluate the interaction between TiO2 nanoparticles and biological matrices at increasing levels of complexity.

#FoodMetrology workshop - October 9th 2015.

Experts will talk about standards and methods for reliable data in food analysis
Researchers from important European institutions working on food safety and authenticity assessment will discuss how the metrological approach is becoming fundamental in ensuring the reliability of risk evaluation, especially when dealing with food and water contaminants.

The Workshop will be held at the Sala Convegni, CNR Research Area MI 1, Via Alfonso Corti 12, Milano.

Food Metrology is an emerging area of scientific, industrial and social interest, which addresses the challenge of traceable measurements of food constituents and contaminants in food matrices, by developing standardized procedures and suitable reference materials to insure full traceability of measurements to SI Units. The free workshop will present scientific findings relevant to measurements in support of food quality and safety.
